Startup India Recognition

Startup India Recognition is an initiative by the Government of India under the Startup India program, aimed at promoting and supporting startups by providing them with various benefits, incentives, and regulatory relaxations. The recognition is granted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

To obtain Startup India recognition, a business must be registered as a Private Limited Company (PLC), a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), or a Partnership Firm. Sole proprietorships and other business structures are not eligible for this recognition.

The entity should not be more than 10 years old from the date of its incorporation. If the company is older than 10 years, it cannot apply for Startup India recognition.

The turnover of the startup should not exceed ₹100 crore in any of the financial years since its incorporation. If the turnover surpasses this limit, the startup loses its eligibility for recognition.

The startup must be involved in innovation, development, or improvement of products, processes, or services, or have a scalable business model with high potential for employment generation and wealth creation.

The business should not be formed by splitting or restructuring an existing company. This condition ensures that only genuinely new businesses receive Startup India benefits.

The application process for Startup India recognition is entirely online through the Startup India portal (www.startupindia.gov.in). Startups must submit business details, a brief description of their innovation, and relevant documents.

Once submitted, the application is reviewed by DPIIT, and upon approval, the startup receives a unique recognition number and certificate. This recognition enables the startup to avail various government benefits.

One of the key benefits of Startup India recognition is the eligibility for tax exemptions under Section 80-IAC of the Income Tax Act. Startups can claim a 100% tax holiday for three consecutive years within their first ten years of operation.
